Champagne Saucer
Champagne was invented by accident by the French monk Dom Perignon in the late 17th Century and was originally drunk fast, rather than sipped.
The champagne saucer is the oldest type of champagne glass, there are persistent rumours that the coupe was modelled on the left breast of Marie Antoinette, however, no one knows for sure.
The coupe has been associated with glamorous women including Helen of Troy, Madam du Pompadour, Sophia Loren and Jackie Kennedy. In 2008 Karl Lagerfeld created a coupe based on Claudia Schiffer’s bosom for Dom Perignon.
The coupe has come back into fashion over the past few years, partly thanks to the influence of the tv show Mad Men as well as movies including The Great Gatsby.
If you want to create a champagne tower as a sophisticated centrepiece at your wedding reception the coupe is essential. A champagne tower can be as large or as small as you like; the glasses have to overlap so that when champagne is poured from the top glass it trickles down the tower.
