Why The Knitted Polo Is Your New Shirt
by Ben St. George
As many of us move away from a more traditional, suit-based wardrobe, it can sometimes be hard to know what pieces of clothing should actually step into that space. That’s where the knitted polo comes in - as a smart, easy-wearing and tactile alternative to a shirt.
A collared merino knit occupies a unique space in the wardrobe. It’s knitwear, obviously, and with that comes the benefits of warmth, softness and basic crease resistance. Its tactility helps it to compliment hardy autumnal fabrics like cotton drill, flannel, worsted wool and tweed beautifully. It also generally will require no ironing and only very infrequent washing.
However from a stylistic point of view, having a collar and button fastening neck makes the garment into a compelling alternative to a shirt. It can easily be worn under a tailored blazer, or even a suit jacket, in place of a traditional shirt, offering all of the ease and comfort that its knitted construction brings, and adding richness and texture to the entire outfit. They’re also fantastically easy to pull on, which makes them an easy choice to reach for in the morning. It sits at the same tier of formality as the reliable button-down shirt - sartorial, but casual and functional, and it works just as well with a casual jacket or worn on its own as it does with tailoring and weekday wear - slipping one under a utility jacket or a bomber on the weekend couldn’t be a more natural fit.
We’ve launched our range of fine merino polos in four colours - grey, sand, navy and storm blue, each chosen for their ability to pair elegantly with classic tailoring tones of navy, charcoal, brown, olive and camel. If you’re looking to add one to your current tailoring rotation, we can help you find the shade that’s most versatile for you. Excitingly, we can offer our new knitwear made-to-order as well, so if you’ve a particular colour in mind, we can have a piece knitted especially for you.
