The BNZ Art Collection
by Murray Crane
If you had to document the history of New Zealand art it would be hard to find a more impressive collection than the BNZ Art Collection.
Established in the 1980’s by (then) General Manager, Mr W. J. Shaw and curated by renowned Wellington gallerist, Peter McLeavey it is a stunning edit of works, including paintings, photographs and ceramics. I particularly like the works of Tony Foiminson & Laurence Aberhart, there are great examples from both artists.
The collection consists of approximately 350 pieces and is currently on tour prior to being auctioned by Webbs, the proceeds going to a new philanthropic trust. In some ways it is a shame to see such an important collection be broken up so if you have the opportunity to visit the preview. Works from the auction will be touring the nation between Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.
For the full auction catalogue visit webbs.co.nz or head over to BNZ's website to see the collection bnzheritage.co.nz.
