Robert Redford
by Murray Crane
Robert Redford, who has died aged 89, was one of cinema’s most enduring figures and a man whose style off screen was as influential as his roles on it. From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to All the President’s Men and Out of Africa, he defined an era of Hollywood storytelling and later helped shape the future of independent film through Sundance.
His clothes were always simple and assured: open-neck shirts, well-cut jackets, denim and boots worn with ease. There was an understated elegance in his choices, never showy yet always considered. Watches and accessories followed the same line - functional, discreet and timeless. Away from film he lived much as he dressed, close to nature in Utah, private and purposeful.
Redford’s career spanned more than six decades as actor, director and mentor. He leaves a body of work that continues to inspire and a legacy of authenticity both in cinema and in life.
