Auckland's Weather
The weather events in Auckland over the last 48 hours are unprecedented. Many of you will have been caught in downpours and will no doubt have items that have been damaged.
Tailored garments and shoes normally fare the worst in torrential rain. Most footwear will survive getting wet. If your shoes are very saturated with water, start by pressing a towel on the outside fabric, and then insert it inside and compress the shoe with your hands to soak up excess water.
You can stuff shoes with balled-up pieces of newspaper. If you don’t have newspaper of any kind, balls of paper towels will work, though you need to put more of them in to get sufficient “firmness” with your stuffing; you need to create ample contact surface between the paper and the shoe for the former to draw the water out of the latter. Once dry use Shoe Trees to help with the shape and revive leather and suede using your normal care regime.
All our tailored garments have a full floating canvas so you don't need to be concerned with delamination. However the garment can still twist or warp. Put a hanger in the jacket and use a trouser-hanger for the trousers (do not use a hanger where the trousers need to be folded) and leave outside. If you are not able to leave clothes outside without protection from rain, you can leave them where there is an airflow to dry out. A room with a dehumidifier is great given the humidity.
Remember moisture creates mildew so you want to dry items as quickly and naturally as possible. Once completely dry, brush down garments as there will be small particles of dirt and dust. If you feel confident you can try to press them with an iron and pressing cloth (with steam) or better yet bring them to us to look after and revive.
Follow your usual care procedure for shirts, knitwear and trousers. Most items of clothing will be covered by your Household Insurance policy.
