The Timeless Elegance of Pleated Trousers
by Murray Crane
One of my enduring memories of working in menswear was working in Vulcan Lane, Auckland, for a retail brand called Monsoon in the mid-90s. At the time, we were a popular choice for dressing celebrities and actors in our baggy, tailored, bright-coloured suits.
I remember introducing a "new" trouser that was flat-fronted - san’s pleats that caused quite a stir with clients used to the comfort and freedom of a much looser, baggier trouser. Stovepipes did exist, but they were confined to New Romantics, Skinheads, and Punks and were generally in a heavy black drill or tartan. Over the next 5, 10, and 15 years, the trouser silhouette continued to become more streamlined as it was slimmed and shortened by various designers, including Helmut Lang and Hedi Slimane.
As with all aspects of popular culture, and especially fashion, everything is cyclical, and recently, men's fashion has continued to see a looser and fuller silhouette once again become more apparent and accepted. The "trend" now seems to be well established, with pleated trousers once again having their place in most men's wardrobes.
So if you’re considering making the move to a pleated trouser, here are some key things to consider:
Pleats add depth and dimension to men's trousers. As well as aesthetic qualities, pleats offer practical benefits in terms of comfort and mobility. The additional fabric created by the pleats allows for greater ease of movement.
Paired with a tailored blazer and dress shirt, pleated trousers are refined and can make a statement at formal events. Alternatively, they can be dressed down with a polo shirt or a casual button-down, making them suitable for semi-formal occasions or a weekend brunch.
A pleated trousers are a classic menswear garment that transcends fashion trends. Whether you're looking to channel the timeless style of Humphrey Bogart or emulate the debonair charm of Cary Grant, pleated trousers evoke an aura of old-world sophistication. Fashion evolves, but classic pieces endure, and pleated trousers are a testament to this notion.
In the ever-changing landscape of men's fashion, some elements remain constant, and pleated trousers are a prime example. With their timeless style and comfort, pleated trousers continue to be a smart and versatile choice.
