Before, After & Beyond
by Murray Crane
If you're in London this month, don't miss Martino Gamper's first full retrospective, opening during Frieze Week.
This marks his first solo show in London since his 2007 exhibition, "100 Chairs in 100 Days." It will showcase the full breadth of Gamper's design and craftsmanship in a way that has never been seen before.
Titled Before, After & Beyond The exhibition transforms an entire house, with each room uniquely staged: a music and games room, home office, living and dining space, and bedroom, all fully furnished with Gamper's work. The installation spans his early experimental pieces, museum projects, industrial products, private commissions, and major new designs, as well as reimagined early works and never-before-seen pieces—many incorporating reclaimed materials and found objects by notable designers.
The exhibition highlights the domesticity in Gamper's work and his process of making, producing, and assembling. It also reflects his philosophy of using design to foster connection and social interaction through furniture.
Born in 1971 in Merano, Italy, Martino Gamper began as an apprentice to a furniture maker before studying sculpture under Michelangelo Pistoletto at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He completed a master's degree at the Royal College of Art in London in 2000, studying under Ron Arad, and established his London studio the same year.
Working across disciplines, Gamper engages in projects ranging from exhibition and interior design to one-off commissions and mass-produced products. His commissions include windows for Prada, Valextra Flagship Stores, chairs for Rubelli and Dior, glassware for Lobmeyr, and our very own High Street Flagship store.
