The Top Half Barbers in Durham Street East, Auckland, has been open since 1991; one of the original owners, George Dyas has been cutting hair for around sixty years. Today the barber’s is owned by ‘young’ Jim Hickling.

We spoke with John Mustafa, who is from Bow in London. His father was also a hairdresser, and John works at Top Half along side his son Jamie.

John told us that TV shows have had a big impact on men’s hairstyles; "the last couple of years, the most popular style we’ve been getting is the would be the side parting, short back and sides. Side parting, comb over; the slick looking, sharp hair cut. The big influence is from tv shows like Suits and Mad Men. Obviously around here, there are a lot of corporate workers and that is the style that suits them.”

Top Half also looks after facial hair "We’ve got to be able to do all the grooming, so eye brows, beards. We have a lot of beards being trimmed, because over the last couple of years beards have came back into fashion. Big, full on, long beards, to short stubble, we cater for all of that. We do get a hell of a lot coming in. We trim them down to the length that they want, we shape up the sides, we use beard creams and oils to condition. If you just leave the beard to grow it will look untidy, messy. We make them look sharp.”

Between John, George, Jim and Jamie all the generations are covered at Top Half, together they have over a hundred years experience of cutting and grooming hair.
